For students with myopia, summer break can be an ideal time to begin orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K. These customized night lenses are worn while sleeping to temporarily reshape the cornea. After removing the lenses in the morning, many patients can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.
Ortho-K lenses are specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses. They gently change the curvature of the cornea overnight to temporarily correct nearsightedness. The treatment is non-surgical and reversible, but the lenses must be worn according to the prescribed schedule to maintain clear daytime vision.
For active students, this can reduce dependence on glasses during sports, swimming, outdoor activities, and school. It can also remove the need to handle soft contact lenses during the day.
Adjusting to Ortho-K does not usually happen all at once. Some patients notice clearer vision quickly, while others may need one to four weeks to experience the full effect. Temporary backup vision correction may also be needed during the early adjustment period.
Summer offers several practical advantages:
• Students can practice inserting, removing, and cleaning their lenses without rushed school mornings
• Parents have more flexibility for fitting appointments and follow-up visits
• Children can adjust to the sensation of night lenses before classes resume
• Vision can become more consistent before reading boards, participating in sports, and completing schoolwork
This extra time can help families establish a dependable nighttime routine and address concerns before the school year becomes busy.
Myopia often progresses as a child’s eyes continue to grow. While standard glasses can correct blurry distance vision, they do not necessarily help slow changes in the prescription.
At our office, we may recommend Ortho-K as part of a personalized myopia management plan. We assess your child’s prescription, corneal shape, overall eye health, daily activities, and ability to follow proper lens-care instructions. We also schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor vision changes, eye growth, lens fit, and treatment progress.
Proper cleaning and handling are essential for safe Ortho-K wear. Children should never use tap water on their lenses, sleep in lenses longer than directed, or continue wearing them when experiencing redness, pain, discharge, or unusual sensitivity to light.
Beginning treatment during summer allows parents to supervise the routine until their child becomes comfortable and consistent. By the first day of school, inserting and removing the lenses may feel like a normal part of getting ready for bed and starting the morning.
